The Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 9 is the newest release of Sun Java System Application Server family. Platform Edition is a full-featured, high-performance, small footprint container focused on developer productivity and free for development and deployment. Application Server Platform Edition is ideal for Java EE application and web services development and for small- to medium-scale deployments that require a Java EE container.
Sun's Application Server family also includes Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition that provide enhanced service quality for larger mission-critical deployments that require extreme scalability and availability.

64-bit Support
Application Server 9 adds support for the 64-bit Solaris Operating System.
Security
For web services security, Application Server 9 containers authenticate SOAP messages
using the X.509, username/password profiles of the OASIS WS-Security
standard and SAML tokens (for example, XML digital signature and encryption).
Application Server 9 supports custom authentication realms, JAAS login modules
and realm chaining and includes capability to add custom audit
modules.
Wev Services Interoperability
As mandated by the Java EE 5.0 specification, Web Services Interoperability (WS-I) Basic
Profile 1.1 enables interoperability for web services applications.
JMS Connectivity
Application Server 9 provides built-in connectivity
with IBM MQ Series, SeeBeyond MQ, and Sun Java System Message Queue Server.
High Performance JMS engine
Application Server 9 includes a high performance scalable message delivery system supporting Java
Message Service Standard.
Long-Running Transactions
Application Server 9 adds support for long-running distributed transactions.
JDBC™ Drivers
Application Server 9 connects to any database server
