To guarantee the security and availability of the data in your database instance, we recommend that you activate automatic log backups.
If automatic log backup is activated, a log segment of the log area is saved as soon as it has been filled. This log segment is then available again to be overwritten. This mechanism ensures that overflows in the log area are practically impossible.
We particularly recommend activating automatic log backups for all database instances where many changes are made to the data, leading to a high volume of log entries. In this way, constant monitoring of the fill level of the log area is not necessary.
You can only perform automatic log backups in the operational state ONLINE. Only version files are allowed as a backup medium. These files must be archived at regular intervals (see Backup).
As long as automatic log backup is active, you cannot start an interactive log backup. However, you can perform a data backup at the same time.
Use the Database Manager or the DBA Planning Calendar in SAP systems to activate and deactivate automatic log backups.
