 Creating Volumes

You want to user the Database Manager GUI to increase the storage capacity of your data area or log area.

·        The maximum number of data volumes you can create is defined in the general database parameter MAXDATAVOLUMES.

·        The maximum number of log volumes you can create is defined in the general database parameter MAXLOGVOLUMES.

Prerequisites

The database instance is in the ONLINE operational state.

The value of the database parameter MAXDATAVOLUMES or MAXLOGVOLUMES is at least as great as the total number of existing volumes plus the volumes you want to define.

The system checks that there is enough space available for at least one volume of each type before each start of the database instance. If there is not enough space available, it automatically increases the setting of the appropriate database parameter by 1.

If necessary, change the database parameter MAXDATAVOLUMES or MAXLOGVOLUMES accordingly (see Changing Database Parameters for Volumes). Later on, when the database instance is in the operational state ONLINE, this enables you to add a volume of a given type a number of times in succession without having to stop the database instance.

Procedure

       1.      Select the required database instance in the list of database instances.

       2.      Choose Instance ® Configuration ® Volumes.
The system displays all existing volumes of the selected type and their data, as well as the maximum number of volumes still possible according to the parameter value.
