 Database Manager Operator (DBM Operator)

A Database Manager operator (DBM operator) can perform various functions of the Database Manager tool, specified by his or her properties. These functions include the control and monitoring of database instances, making backups, or restoring a database instance. The operator can log on to the Database Manager more than once, which means he or she can, for example, query information about the running database instance while functions that take a long time are still running.

You define the first DBM operator when you install a database instance. This operator can then create more DBM operators, to which he or she can assign some or all of his or her authorizations. When you use the Database Manager CLI to access the database instance, the first DBM operator is the system default. This default is used whenever no operator is specified.

The Database Manager stores the name and password of the DBM operators in uppercase characters. They can have a maximum of 18 characters (nine characters in UNICODE). Special characters are not permitted.

DBM operators are not usually database users. For example, they cannot connect to the query tools or the Loader program, since only database users can work with these programs.

The only exceptions to this rule are as follows:

·         The first DBM operator
This operator has various database user rights only when accessing a database instance with the Database Manager CLI.
This operator cannot create any further database users.

·         The database system administrator (SYSDBA user)
This administrator is the first database user with all rights.
This administrator also has the rights of a DBM operator.
