Backing Up to a Group of Parallel Backup Media

You can use the Backup Wizard to back up data interactively. To maximize the speed of the backup, you can back up data to a group of parallel backup media. You can use up to 32 tape devices to reduce backup times significantly.

If possible, we recommend that you back up data to a group of parallel backup media, rather than backing up the data to a single backup medium with succeeding media. You cannot make log backups in parallel.

Check the database structures before each complete data backup.

Prerequisites

There are multiple backup devices available.

You have created the required backup media.
If you want to perform a backup using an automatic tape loader (Backups with Automatic Tape Loaders), or with the help of external backup tools (Backing Up with External Backup Tools), then you must state this specifically when defining the media.

Under normal circumstances, you should back up database instances in the ONLINE operational state.
In exceptional circumstances, you can back up database instances in the ADMIN operational state.

Procedure

Use the Backup Wizard.

       1.      If you have not yet created a group of parallel backup media, do this now as described in Creating a Group of Parallel Backup Media. Select a group of parallel backup media in the window Media for Backup.

       2.      Check the details. Change them if required (Changing Backup Media).

       3.      Start the backup.
If the capacity of the specified group is not large enough for the backup and you are not using an automatic tape loader, the Backup Wizard asks you to specify and insert a new backup medium as soon as the previous medium has been filled (see Backups with Manually Changed Media (Succeeding Media)).
