For backups and recoveries, you need a backup medium. Data is backed up to this medium, from where it can then be restored again. Backup media include files, tapes, autoloaders, and pipes.
Define separate backup media for each database instance. You can combine multiple backup media in a group of parallel backup media.
Note the following points:
· The recommended backup media for data backups are tape and autoloader. Data may also be backed up to pipes or files.
· The only valid media type for log backups are files; version files are created automatically.
· Only use pipes if you are working with an external backup tool.
· Follow the naming conventions for backup media.
· For security reasons, archive your files and version files on a separate medium.
Follow the manufacturer's recommendations on how frequently backup media should be used.
Use the Database Manager or, in SAP systems, the Database Assistant to define the backup media.
