You can use the Database Manager to create or initialize database instances on a local or remote computer.
·
Creating or Initializing a Local Database
Instance
To create a database instance on your local computer, your operating system
user must have administration rights for this computer.
To initialize an existing local database instance, you also need the
administration rights for this database instance. This is guaranteed
automatically if you log on as the first DBM operator.
·
Creating or Initializing a Remote Database
Instance
To create a
database instance on a remote computer, you must specify an operating system
user for this computer that has administration rights, and also the right
log on as batch job, or a similar right. (For more information on the
administration of operating system users, see your operating system
documentation.)
To initialize an existing database instance on a remote computer, you also
need the administration rights for this database instance. This is guaranteed
automatically if you log on as the first DBM operator.
To help you when you create database instances, the Database Manager GUI provides predefined configurations in templates. You can use these templates to create database instances with different sizes and properties. The Database Manager GUI includes the following templates:
· Blank: Database instance with standard settings. Here, you must create the volumes and backup media interactively.
· Demo: Fully configured demonstration database, suitable for test purposes. You can create this demonstration database in the background.
· Small: Database instance whose parameters, volumes, and backup media are configured to create a small database.
· Medium: Database instance whose parameters, volumes, and backup media are configured to create a medium-sized database.
The default settings in these templates are just recommendations. You can change them to meet your requirements. You can save the settings of your database instance in a template with a name of your choice, and add this template to the existing templates in the Database Manager GUI.
...
In the Database Manager GUI, choose Instance ® Create... .
Choose Next to start each of the required steps.
1.
Select
a template.
If you want to use default settings, choose Blank.
If you want to use a predefined configuration, select one of the
available templates (Demo, Small, and so
on).
If you use the Demo template to create a database instance, the
instance can be created in the background. To do this, choose Unattended
Installation.
2.
Enter
the following details:
Database instance on your local computer:
Database Server: <local>: Do not change this entry.
Database
name
- When creating a database instance: Enter the name of the new
database.
- Initialization of a database instance: Enter the name of the database
instance that you want to initialize.
Database instance on a remote computer:
Database Server: Enter the name of the computer.
Database Name
- When creating a database instance: Enter the name of the new
database.
- Initialization of a database instance: Enter the name of the database
instance that you want to initialize.
Login Name: Enter the operating system user for this computer.
Password: Enter the password for this operating system user.
3. There may be more than one installation of the database software on the same computer. Select the appropriate installation.
4. Specify the Database Manager operator (DBM operator). Do not use any special characters. The default name and password is DBM. If required, change the name and password, then confirm the new password.
The Database Manager saves the name and password of the DBM operator in uppercase letters.
5. Decide how you want to give the database parameters initial values.
Initialize parameters with default values
Here, the
database parameters are given the default values of the database software.
Copy parameters from existing database
Here,
the initial
values of the database parameters are taken from an existing database
instance.
Select the database instance from which you want to copy the parameter
values.
Restore parameters from a backup medium
Here, the
initial values of the database parameters are taken from a complete data
backup.
Select the complete data backup that you want to use.
Use current parameters
If you are
initializing a database instance, you can use the current parameter
values.
6.
Select
a database
instance type.
If you chose Use current parameters, the system uses the instance type
of the existing database instance.
7.
Adjust
the database parameters to your requirements.
Select the database parameters you want.
New Value: Enter and confirm the new value of the database
parameter.
The value of the database parameter is stored in the internal data structures
and becomes effective when the database instance is next restarted.
The database parameters are checked when you exit the input screen. You may be prompted to make and confirm changes before you can leave this screen.
8. Define your data volumes and log volumes.
Choose New Volume for both.
Enter the size and ID or the absolute path of the volume and confirm your
entries.
9. Define any backup media that you need.
10. Choose from the following options:
Create and start instance
Specify the
database
system administrator (SYSDBA user). Do not use any special characters. The
default name and password is DBA. If required, change the name and password,
then confirm the new password.
The database
instance is created or initialized and transferred to the ONLINE operational
state.
Create instance for recovery
The database
instance is created or initialized and transferred to the ADMIN operational
state. You can use this database instance for a recovery only.
The details of the SYSDBA user are taken from the data backup.
11. Choose Start to create or initialize the database instance.
If any errors occur, the process is stopped immediately. However, the state reached when the error occurred is preserved.
12. Choose Close.
You can initialize an existing database instance.
1. Select the required database instance in the list of database instances.
2.
In the
Database Manager GUI, choose Instance ® Initialize... .
Choose Next to start each of the required
steps.
3. Select Initialize the database instance <database_name>.
4. If necessary, transfer the database instance to the ADMIN operational state.
5.
Leave
Use current parameters selected.
You can accept the current parameter values.
6. Now proceed as described from step 7 of Creating a Database Instance. The volumes and backup media of the previous database instance are offered as defaults.
You can save the details you enter when you create or initialize a database instance in a template with a name of your choice. The system proposes a path and name for the template, and saves the template as an operating system file. In this way, you can modify the group of templates to meet your requirements.
