To avoid large amounts of data having a negative effect on performance, you can archive the data at periodic intervals.
The database instance type Archive enables you to retain this data alongside the production database instance in a second database instance, where you can access the data directly. However, the data in the second database instance can be stored more cheaply on mass storage media.
The Archive instance type is an OLTP instance with the added ability to address a hierarchical memory management system as a volume. Since this function can have a significant effect on performance when the database is running normally, a separate instance type is used.
Usually, an Archive database instance is used in parallel with a normal OLTP database instance: frequently used data is stored in the OLTP database instance; more rarely used data is stored in the Archive database instance. The higher-level application (for example, Business Warehouse) is responsible for controlling the distribution of the data.
An Archive database instance always has at least one normal data volume and one archive data volume. Archive data volumes can be configured only once, when the database instance is created. They cannot be added later.
