 Volumes

A volume is a logical grouping of physical storage units (disks). A volume can be a part of a physical disk, a complete physical disk, or a completely structured storage system consisting of several storage units. The disks used should have similar performance parameters (specifically, access speeds) to ensure that the volumes are filled evenly.

The database system differentiates between data volumes and log volumes. Every database instance has one or more log volumes and data volumes. If database management tools are used, a volume is addressed through a directory path. You can change the directory paths.

The number of data volumes and log volumes that you can define for a database instance is specified in the general database parameters MAXDATAVOLUMES and MAXLOGVOLUMES. You can configure one or more of these data volumes and log volumes when you install a new database instance. If necessary, you can configure more volumes while the database is running.

Managing Volumes

To manage the volumes, use the Database Manager or the Database Assistant of the CCMS in SAP systems.

·        Database Manager GUI, section Managing Database Instances

·        Database Manager CLI, commands for configuring database instances

·        Database Administration in CCMS: MySQL MaxDB, Volumes

·        Database Administration in CCMS: SAP liveCache, Volumes
