When you back up data, you back up content from the data volumes, as well as the database parameters required for a recovery to a backup medium of your choice.
The following data backup types exist:
· In a complete data backup, all pages of the data volumes are backed up.
· In an incremental data backup, all pages of the data volumes are backed up that have changed since the last complete data backup.
You can perform complete and incremental data backups in the operational mode ONLINE or ADMIN. You can also back up to a group of parallel backup media. Data backups are always consistent.
If errors occur, you may need log backups in addition to the data backups, to restore the required state of the database instance.
You cannot start an incremental data backup during a complete data backup.
Use the Database Manager or, in SAP systems, the DBA Planning Calendar to perform the backups.
