 Standard Installation on UNIX

Use

You want to install the installation profile all of the database software on the UNIX operating system. All necessary information is queried by the program during the installation.

The installation process is logged by the system.

Prerequisites

·        You are in a rootshell.

·        You have downloaded and unpacked the installation package (Downloading and Unpacking the Database Software on UNIX).

Preparations

If the following conditions apply to your system, you must perform the specified steps before the installation:

·        The installation program enters the required services sql6, sql30, and sapdbni72 in the file /etc/services if they do not already exist there. If these services are managed centrally for your system on the network (NIS), you must enter them there as follows:
sql6 7210/tcp
sql30  7200/tcp
sapdbni72 7269/tcp

·        During the installation, the database software must be assigned to a special operating system user, <sdb_user>, as the owner of the software, and to the group <sdba_group>.
The group and the owner must have been defined in advance. Only users with the correct authorizations can generate the database instances later (see also Authorization Concept for UNIX Operating Systems for software versions from 7.5.00).
The special operating system user must not log on to the operating system. For this reason, take this authorization away from this user. For information on how to do this, see your operating system documentation (lock account).

If you manage user groups and owners locally on your computer, we recommend that you register the names of the user groups and the owner in the operating system before you start the installation. However, you can also specify this information during the installation process.
If you manage user groups and owners for your system centrally in the network, you must create them here before you start the installation. For more information on creating operating system users and user groups, see your operating system documentation.

The primary group of the owner of the database software is the administrator group.

For consistency, especially if you need the help of the support team, we recommend that you use the names sdb and sdba for the owner and group.

·        If the path <independent_program_path>/bin is not yet entered in the environment variable PATH, enter it now. (For information on setting environment variables, see your operating system documentation.)

Procedure

...

       1.      Go to the directory
maxdb-all-<os>-32|64bit-<arch>-<version>_<build>,
into which you unpacked the installation package.

       2.      Enter ./SDBINST, to call the installation program.

       3.      The system displays the possible installation profiles. Enter the ID for the installation profile all and confirm it.

       4.      The system prompts you to enter the following information:

¡        Special operating system user <sdb_user> (owner of the SAP DB database software)

¡        The group <sdba_group>

If you have already created the groups and the owner, enter the correct values and confirm them. The system compares this information with the values stored locally or elsewhere in the network. If your entries do not match the stored values, the installation crashes.

If the group and the owner have not yet been created, the system asks whether you want to create them. Enter your chosen values or confirm the system default values. This creates the group and the owner locally on your computer.

       5.      The system now checks whether there are installations of the database system already on your computer.

¡        If installations of the database system already exist on your computer, a list of these installations is displayed. You are requested to specify the ID of the installation that you want to upgrade.
For a new installation of the database software in parallel with an existing installation, enter none. You then have the option of specifying an installation path that is different from the existing installations. Define an installation path in parallel with the existing installation paths.

¡        If there are no installations of the database software on your computer, the software components contained in the installation profile are now installed. The system prompts you to specify the following paths:

·         Path for storing the data, configurations, and run directories of the database instances and database applications (the system default value is /var/opt/sdb/data)

·         Path for storing the programs and libraries shared by the database instances and database applications (the system default value is /opt/sdb/programs)

·         Path for storing the server software that depends on the database version
This path must be unique.
Multiple directories with different versions can exist alongside each other (the system default value is /opt/sdb/<version>)

Enter your chosen paths or confirm the system default values.

       6.      If there were no installations of the database system on your computer until now, add the following entry to the PATH environment variable for all users that want to use the database system: <independent_program_path>/bin.

You see a success message about the installation.

Result

The installation profile all of the database software is now installed and registered on your computer. You can use the log to check the result of the installation (Logging on UNIX).

You can now create new database instances using the Database Manager

(See:

·        Creating a Database Instance in the Database Manager CLI documentation

·        The Web DBM documentation)
