The following tips on setting up a new database instance are recommendations that will help you achieve a good operational I/O performance.
· If you want to operate several database instances, install each database instance on a separate computer.
· Store data volumes and log volumes on different disks. The log volumes are the areas of the database instance that see the most write activity, because all the data modifications are logged in them.
· Even if you use RAID 5 systems, configure the database instance with several data volumes. Working with several data volumes gives you a better performance than a single one, because some parallel mechanisms used by the database system depend on the number of configured data volumes.
· Create log volumes on dedicated disks or RAID 1 systems only and not on RAID 5 systems.
· Do not swap areas or paging areas on the same disk as the log entries.
· In UNIX systems, use raw devices for the data volumes and the log volumes, because generally it is quicker to access data in raw devices than it is to access data in files.
